Carbon dioxide emission reductions are calculated on a saving per day of home working basis. The figure used in the calculations is 9kgCO2/day. The 9kgCO2/day of home working used in the calculations is a ‘reasonable figure’ taken after a review of the current literature and research in this field.
Much of the research literature does not take into account possible rebound effects and offsets of carbon savings. These are uses of the personal motor vehicle during a home working day that wouldn't otherwise occur if the vehicle had been parked at work. To account for these in some way, a 'reasonable' 10% has been taken off the CO2 savings figure, in line with other recent commercial studies in the UK.
There are also possible benefits from lower home electrical energy use and heating demand than the equivalent in an office. Most research has focused on the travel savings rather than heating and electrical savings. Therefore the CO2 savings figures used in this paper are weighted in line with previous research and reduces the possibility of exaggerating possible carbon savings. Should data be provided on ICT equipment usage in the survey, then this will be added in addition to Carbon Savings with SVCC.

In order to present this information in a clear savings definition we have converted the amount of CO2 that could be saved annually when employing only 5 SVCC workers into the equivalent number of car journeys this could save. The journey saving calculation is based upon an average car emission factor (Defra 2007) of 0.334kg/mile and average car journey to work of 8 miles. The annual savings per 5 home-workers is equal to 10.575 tonnes CO2. This figure divided by 0.334kg/mile = 31,661 miles, if we then divide this by 8 miles (average journey) we get a saving of 3,957 car journeys equivalent. This signifies that with the employment of 40 SVCC home-workers the savings in car journeys per year would be equivalent to 31,661.
